FAQs

Here are some answers to common questions

1. ?

A: *Before* you even ask a question, check the course website. Most questions — e.g., when are the discussion sections? how many per week? what you need if you didn’t attend the first class? etc. — are already answered on the website. The second resource to check for supplemental information is the CANVAS site. Please look around first.

2. Which edition of the book and homework software do I need?

A: The book: *Any* edition will do: new or used, full text or custom edition
etc. Just get the one that makes sense for you financially.

Homework software: For the online homework, however, *only* the Connect
software associated with the latest edition of the e-book will work. All the information you need is given on the homework page.

3. Where/how can I borrow a book?

Please talk to one of the two TAs.

4. I am number X on the wait list. Should I wait to see if I will get in?

A: This is entirely your call. Conservatively, anyone with a wait list number under 5
should get in but we obviously can’t guarantee anything.

5. How much math will there be in the class?

A: The math is not college level – mostly single variable algebra (solve for
the one unknown quantity in an equation) and some trigonometry. Comfort with
powers of 10 is a good thing because we’re dealing with umm, astronomical
numbers here. That said, we’ll practice in discussion sections. Please come
to these if you feel you’re rusty or uncomfortable with the above and we will
help you out.

6. Discussion sections – when, where, how many?

A: Check the class web page for the discussion section time and location.
Attending discussion sections is mandatory.

7. Can I get special credit?

A. There is no special credit for this class.
